Each year the Brain Injury Association of Michigan (BIAMI) honors organizations, programs, professionals and/or persons by the presentation of awards for outstanding contributions to the Brain Injury Association of Michigan and in the field of brain injury services. Chairperson's Award Carol Green Congratulations to Carol Green! Carol is simply an amazing woman who has dedicated her life to helping others. She has many gifts and is willing to share with whomever needs her. She is a leader, clinician, a certified brain injury trainer, mentor and a humorist to name a few. Carol has volunteered for BIAMI many years and never hesitates to jump right in whenever she is called, no matter what task. She volunteers in the planning of the fall conference, during the entire conference, east golf outing, Legacy dinner and ACBIS trainings. Carol will stuff envelopes, handle registrations, schlep signs, load cars and still jump up to speak at a moments notice. We are extremely fortunate to have a friend and supporter like Carol as part of our BIAMI family. This award is given annually to an organization or individual who has demonstrated significant efforts in assisting the Brain Injury Association of Michigan in accomplishing its mission during the year. Education/Public Awareness Award Mary Rigo-Burdo Mary has long demonstrated her dedication to enhance the knowledge of people working in brain injury. She diligently pursues standards of excellence while maintaining her kindness and support of those she works with. Mary plays an integral leadership role in the educational programming of the Brain Injury Association of Michigan. She provides clinical guidance in the selection of superior speakers and recruits and coordinates a dedicated volunteer base to provide the speaker support for the largest brain injury conference. From the start of the BIAMI ACBIS (Academy of Certified Brain Injury Specialist) Program, Mary has provided invaluable support as a Trainer and coordinating and proctoring the exams for all West Michigan CBIS Applicants. As a direct result of her work, Michigan far surpasses the number of Certified Brain Injury Specialists in the nation! Volunteer Award Tisha Maki Tisha has worked in the brain injury field for about 10 years. During those years, she has quietly volunteered behind the scenes planning for our fall conference and recruiting exhibitors and sponsors. Tisha continues to be a strong cheerleader, encouraging professionals, survivors and families to become actively involved in the BIA. Tisha has taken on coordinating all the volunteers for the Eastern Grand Invitational Golf Outing for the past 5 years. She has organized the process of volunteer management so well, that it can nearly run itself! Tisha brings such a special sparkle to her volunteer roles that she is a pleasure to work with. She takes personal interest in everyone she works with, making sure that they are able to get the most out of their experience. This award is given annually to recognize an individual or organization who made the greatest single impact on promoting brain injury prevention programs or activities during the year. Prevention Award John Johnson on behalf of the Michigan High School Athletic Association The Michigan High School Athletic Association has been a partner of the Brain Injury Association of Michigan for over 10 years. Together we have striven to reduce traumatic brain injuries. With our first endeavor, over 3 years, they distributed 10,000 sports concussion palm cards to every coach, trainer, Athletic Director, Assistant Athletic Director, nurses, in every sport to every school in Michigan. MHSAA took a stronger step to increase awareness on the prevalence and serious consequences of sports concussions in youth sports. The MHSAA established a new protocol to mandate that any athlete suspected of suffering a concussion must not participate in athletic events until cleared by a licensed health professional. The MHSAA took this initiative upon themselves to require this of their schools, without as some states have, been required to state law. BIAMI is proud to call the Michigan High School Athletic Association our partner This award is given annually to recognize an individual or organization who made the greatest single impact on promoting brain injury prevention programs or activities during the year.Annual Award Nominations
